GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Department of Geography offers courses leading to the Master of Science degree and Doctor of Philosophy.   These degree programs are designed to help students acquire the background and skills necessary for employment in locational analysis, spatial analysis, regional planning, resource management, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), computer cartography, cartographic editing, historic preservation, physical geography, cultural geography, and other fields in which geographic methodologies and perspectives may be applied.
 
Faculty in the Department place particular emphasis on the applied aspects of geography, since many program graduates are employed by city, regional, state, and national planning agencies. Interdisciplinary work is strongly encouraged, particularly in environmental science, resource management, urban and regional studies, and historic preservation. Recipients of the our graduate degrees in geography have gone on to a variety of successful careers in fields including retail store location analysis, resource management, sports consulting, transportation management, banking, and university teaching. 

The department specializes in three broad areas:
          1.  cultural and historical geography
          2.  resource management
          3.  transportation/urban geography
