The Department, centrally located on the
campus, provides space for faculty and graduate offices, a cartographic
laboratory, a computer facility, and a seminar room. A large, well-equipped
classroom building is adjacent to the Department.
The University's Cartography Service, housed
in the Department and managed by a professional geographer, prepares maps and
other graphics for faculty research and teaching needs.
The Center for Applications of Remote
Sensing (CARS), administered by the Department, is directed by a professional
geographer and is equipped with ERDAS software running on a dedicated computer
system and peripherals for the processing and analysis of satellite data.
The Department also manages a National
Science Foundation funded computing laboratory featuring micro and workstation
computers linked within a local area network to faculty and staff offices.
Global positioning system receivers are
available to students to support their field research. Graduate and
undergraduate students are employed by various funded research projects. Some
teaching assistantships are available.
