Degree Programs


Five undergraduate degree programs are available to students who wish to study geography at OSU:

1.The Bachelor of Science degree program is offered to students who seek greater technical training that may lead to careers in such fields as environmental planning and resource management, urban and regional planning, remote sensing and geographic information systems, cartography, and in teaching. Major requirements for the B.S. include a total of 45 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. Core courses include Geography 1113 or 2253 (see Courses Offered), 2343, 3333, 4323, 4313 or 4413, and 4333 or 4343 or 4353. In addition, 21 hours of upper-division geography courses are required, and 6 hours of (non-geography) upper division related coursework.

2.The Bachelor of Arts degree program is offered to those students who may have specific career interests such as those in the B.S. program, but who are also interested in pursuing a more traditional liberal arts degree program. Major requirements for the B.A. include a total of 45 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. Core courses include Geography 1113 or 2253, 2343, 3333, 4313 or 4413, and 4323. In addition, 24 hours of upper-division geography courses are required and 6 hours of (non-geography) upper-division related coursework.

3.The Bachelor of Science degree option for applied resource management is for students who seek a techniques-oriented, specialized, natural science-based program. It is offered to persons planning to pursue a resource management career. Major requirements for this B.S. include a total of 51 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50. Core courses include: Geography 3153, 3333, 4313, 4323, 4333, and 4343; 6 hours from the following GEOG courses: 3023, 3033, 3163, 4003, 4043, 4053, 4153, and 4183; and ENGL 3323, MSIS 2103, and SPCH 3723. In addition, 18 hours of upper-division geography courses are required, 9 hours from natural sciences and 9 hours from social sciences/policy. These 18 hours must come from an approved list selected in consultation with the undergraduate advisor.

4.The Geography minor is available to students who major in other disciplines and who complete 16 credit hours of geography. The required courses are Geography 1113 or 2253, 1114, and 9 hours of additional courses in geography, including 6 hours at the upper-division level. The minimum grade for all courses taken is a "C".
