OSU Geography

Welcome to the Student Development Map Servers

The Department of Geography maintains two map servers for ARCIMS Development by Students in Departmental Courses or working on approved projects.  Maps displayed on this server are non-proprietary and solely used for educational purposes.  If you have any questions regarding maps or other issues related to the map server site, please contact Dr Allen Finchum at finchum@okstate.edu or Dr Jonathan Comer at jcomer@okstate.edu.  The two servers are reached directly at either http://www3.geog.okstate.edu/ (Server #1) or http://www4.geog.okstate.edu/ (Server #2).

The Department of Geography also maintains an ArcIMS WebServer to disseminate Geospatial Information for the State of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Center for Geospatial Information.  This server is accessible at http://www.ocgi.okstate.edu.

This site is best viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, and it has been found that ALL other browsers experience problems viewing the ARCIMS generated maps displayed here.  If you do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer, download it here:

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6

It is also suggested that the user MAXIMIZE this window BEFORE proceeding to any of the maps shown below (if it is not already maximized), and that you also NOT use the "BACK" or "REFRESH" buttons on your browser after initializing ARCIMS (this is why a new window may have been spawned).  To reload a map or return to a previous map view, use the ARCIMS function buttons provided in the ARCIMS interface.

If you need to download the Java Plugin, BE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL instructions and note the location of the downloaded files for input in a later screen menu (this is noted in the dialog boxes).  Diligently reading and following the dialog instructions during the download and installation process is critical to the correct function of the plugin.  If you do not follow the instructions precisely, the plugin will not function correctly and you will be prompted to run the download and install again.  Also, it is suggested that the computer be restarted after the download and install process is completed - the instructions suggest a restart of the browser only, but this is not always successful, while a complete restart will insure that the browser buffers are cleared as necessary for proper function of the plugin.  Once the plugin is successfully installed once, you WILL NOT have to complete this process again.

Student Instructions for Using the Development Map Server:

  • All file and directory names used on the server should conform to the 8.3 naming format to avoid problems sometimes associated with long filenames in certain web browsers and operating systems.
  • All shapefiles for use on student websites should be placed in subdirectories in the MapData Directory on the "C:/" Drive on the ArcIMS Test workstation using the student's initials as the 1st three letters of the directory name, followed by a 1-5 character descriptor: (i.e.: c:/mapdata/gaftest1/).
  • All .axl files MUST be saved into the c:/ArcIMS/axl/ directory.  Again use your initials and a 1-5 character descriptor for the .axl file name (i.e.: c:/ArcIMS/axl/gaftest1.axl).
  • All websites MUST be saved into the c:/ArcIMS/Website/ directory.  Again use your initials and a 1-5 character descriptor for the website name (i.e.: c:/ArcIMS/axl/gaftest1).
